Chem film — chemical conversion coating, also called chromate conversion, Alodine, or Iridite — is a thin, conductive, repairable coating on aluminum and an excellent paint base. It is the standard prep under primer and the standard finish where aluminum must stay electrically bonded. Gleco applies chem film to MIL-DTL-5541, Type I and Type II, at our AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certified Texas plants.

Where each finish runs

Rowlett (DFW): clear and yellow chem film. MIL-DTL-5541 Type I and Type II, Class 1A and Class 3.

McAllen (Rio Grande Valley): clear trivalent chem film only. MIL-DTL-5541 Type II, Class 1A and Class 3.

If your print calls for yellow or for hexavalent Type I, the work runs at Rowlett. If you need RoHS-compliant trivalent, either plant can run it.

What is chem film (Alodine/Iridite)?

Chem film, also called chemical conversion coating, chromate conversion, Alodine, or Iridite, is a thin conversion coating on aluminum per MIL-DTL-5541. It provides corrosion protection and electrical conductivity and is an excellent paint base — the standard prep under primer.

Type I vs Type II — which do I need?

Type I is hexavalent-chromium chemistry; Type II is non-hexavalent (trivalent), which is RoHS compliant. We apply both — Type II where RoHS applies, Type I where a legacy specification requires it.

What is the difference between Class 1A and Class 3?

Class 1A gives maximum corrosion protection (painted or unpainted); Class 3 is a thinner film optimized for low electrical contact resistance on grounding and bonding surfaces while still protecting against corrosion.

Does chem film change part dimensions?

No. Chem film adds no measurable dimensional change, and it can be conductive (Class 3), which is why it is specified for electronics chassis and grounding surfaces where anodize would insulate.
