We are one of the shops that still runs cadmium — and runs it right. For programs that are transitioning away from cadmium, we plate zinc-nickel to AMS 2417 and ASTM B841 on the same floor, so you can qualify the replacement finish with the same supplier that runs your legacy drawings.

Do you still offer cadmium plating, and what classes?
Yes. We plate cadmium to AMS-QQ-P-416 and AMS 2400 to the type and class on your drawing, with supplementary chromate treatment where specified, and hydrogen embrittlement relief baking for high-strength steels.
Can you help us transition a drawing from cadmium to zinc-nickel?
Yes. Because we run both processes, we can plate qualification lots to AMS 2417 or ASTM B841 alongside your legacy cadmium parts so your engineering team can compare performance under identical handling.
Are you ITAR registered?
Yes. Gleco Plating is registered with the U.S. State Department Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) and processes ITAR-controlled hardware under documented access controls. We also support DFARS flow-down requirements on defense purchase orders.
What does Class 3 chem film mean for my grounding surfaces?
MIL-DTL-5541 Class 3 is a thinner coating optimized for low electrical resistance while still providing corrosion protection. We process Class 1A and Class 3, Type 1 and Type 2 (hexavalent and trivalent), per your drawing callout.
What does DFARS compliance actually mean for a finishing supplier?

For a processor it means two things: carrying the flow-downs that arrive with the order, and not introducing non-compliant material into your part. We do not supply the base metal, so the specialty-metals restriction at DFARS 252.225-7009 follows your material certificates; what we control is the process chemistry, the records, and the handling of controlled information. What we hold is listed on our certifications and approvals page.

How is ITAR technical data handled when we send prints with an RFQ?

Drawings, models and specifications that arrive with a controlled job are treated as controlled data: restricted internal access, no forwarding outside the company, and no offshore review. We are ITAR registered and will confirm handling in writing before you transmit anything. Mark an export-controlled print as such on the RFQ rather than waiting for the purchase order.

Can you apply CARC, and what has to go underneath it?

Yes — chemical agent resistant topcoat over a qualified epoxy primer, which in turn needs the correct pretreatment: conversion coating on aluminum, zinc phosphate or a plated undercoat on steel. That work runs through our Rowlett campus, where plating and CARC and MIL-spec painting are on the same site. Give us the full stack callout from the drawing, not only the topcoat number.

Our drawing calls a Type II chem film. Can you run non-hexavalent?

Yes. In MIL-DTL-5541 the type describes the chromium chemistry while the class sets the balance between corrosion protection and electrical contact resistance, so a Type II Class 3 callout and a Type I Class 1A callout are different products from the same line. The combinations, and what each is used for, are laid out on the MIL-DTL-5541 chem film specification page. Yellow chem film runs at Rowlett.

Where does cadmium run, and should we expect it to stay available?

Cadmium plating runs only at our McAllen plant, to AMS-QQ-P-416 with the chromate type and post-plate bake your drawing calls for. It remains available for defense work; the pressure on it comes from European chemical regulation and from primes retiring it on new designs, not from a domestic ban. If a program is planning a conversion, put it on a new part number rather than a drawing change mid-build.

Can you finish a mixed-material assembly for a ground vehicle program?

Usually, but the sequence matters more than the finishes. Steel and aluminum in one weldment cannot go through the same tanks, so either the details are finished before assembly or areas are masked and treated separately. Threaded and sliding interfaces on that hardware often want a dry film lubricant, which runs at Rowlett, rather than a second coat of paint. Send the assembly print with the finish marked per detail.
