What Is Zinc Phosphate Coating?

Zinc phosphate is a conversion coating: the steel surface is chemically converted into a tightly bonded crystalline zinc phosphate layer rather than having a metal deposited on top of it. That crystalline structure dramatically increases surface area, which is why it is one of the best paint and powder bases available and why it holds preservative oils so well.
MIL-DTL-16232 Type Z is the military specification for zinc phosphate coatings. Depending on the class called out, the coating is left bare as a paint base or sealed with a supplementary oil, wax, or lubricant for corrosion resistance and reduced friction.
