Electroless nickel is chosen when geometry defeats electroplating. Because the deposit is chemical rather than electrical, it lays down at essentially the same thickness on a flat, in a bore and inside a blind hole — which is exactly where racked plating runs thin.

Uniform deposit on complex geometry

Internal diameters, blind holes, recesses and threads all take the same build. That is the reason to specify it, and it is why it costs more than a racked nickel.

Phosphorus content matters

Low, medium and high phosphorus deposits behave differently on corrosion, hardness and magnetic response. If your print specifies a range, call it out; if it does not, tell us the service and we will recommend one.

Dimensional predictability

Because the build is uniform, the dimensional effect is predictable — which is why electroless nickel appears so often on close-tolerance hydraulic and valve components.

Post-plate bake

High-strength steel requires an embrittlement relief bake per ASTM B850, and heat treatment is also used to raise deposit hardness where the specification calls for it. Both have to be on the purchase order.

Why choose electroless nickel over electroplated nickel?

Geometry. Electroplating follows the electrical field, so recesses, bores and blind features run thin. Electroless nickel deposits chemically and lays down uniformly regardless of shape. If your part is a flat plate, electroplated nickel is usually the cheaper answer.

What phosphorus content should I specify?

It depends what you need. The ranges differ meaningfully on corrosion resistance, as-plated hardness and magnetic response. If the print specifies one, we run it; if not, tell us the service environment and we will recommend one. See our electroless nickel page.

Can it be heat treated for hardness?

Yes, where the specification calls for it. Bear in mind that a heat treatment is a thermal cycle applied to your part — if the substrate is temper-sensitive, that is a conversation to have before the order rather than after.

Do you bake for hydrogen embrittlement?

Yes, per ASTM B850 where the material condition requires it. Identify the requirement, the material condition and the governing specification on the purchase order — baking has to begin promptly after plating.

Are you AS9100D registered?

Yes, along with ISO 9001:2015, and we are ITAR registered and DFARS compliant. The certificate is downloadable and we will send it to your supplier quality group directly.
